Some local pharmacies can now help your children (aged 2-19) with free treatments for headlice (kutus), scabies, boils, infected bites, and school sores thanks to funding from the BOPDHB.
This new Pharmacy Kiri Ora project is a FREE service with no appointment necessary.
Just walk into your pharmacy and consult with the pharmacist to see if we can help you with a free skin assessment, treatment advice, and the medicine you need.
If your child has scabies or headlice pharmacists may also be able provide free treatment and advice to affected household members to help eliminate these conditions. Pharmacists will also follow-up on the progress of your condition.
It is important to take care of our skin to keep us healthy.
FREE TREATMENT FOR SKIN INFECTIONS AND HEADLICE FOR CHILDREN:
Head lice are small insects found in human hair. They grow to about the size of 1-2mm. They are a common problem and cause concern and frustration for parents and children. The great thing through the Kiri Ora programme is they are easily treated and your pharmacist can supply treatment, advice and a metal comb for the patient (aged 2-19) and all famiy members or close contacts. This is a FREE service
Scabies is an itcy rash caused by a 0.3mm mite that burrows under the skin surface which causes a dreadful itch, often more severe at night. Scabies is nearly always acquired by skin to skin contact with someone with scabies. Only brief contact is required for transmission. They often affect between the fingers, toes, underarm and groin area. The great news is through the Kiri Ora programme is they are easily treated and your pharmacist can supply treatment and advice for the patient (aged 2-19) and all famiy members or close contacts. Impetigo is a common acute bacterial skin infection. It is commonly known as 'school sores' as it often occurs in children and is easily spread. Impetigo may be caught from someone else with impetigo or boils or appear out of the blue. It often starts at the site of a minor injury such as a graze, insect bite, or scratched eczema. The great news is through the Kiri Ora programme is they are easily treated and your pharmacist can supply treatment and advice for any patient aged 2-19. This is a FREE service
Boils are a deep infection of the hair follicles and present as one or more tender red spots, lumps or pustules Cellulitis is a common bacterial infection of the skin which can affect all ages. It usually affects a limb but can occur anywhere on the body. Selected EBOP and Te Puke Pharmacies are able to treat small boils and minor cellulitis in children aged 5-19 for FREE. All moderate to severe cases must be referred to the patient's GP or ED department.
